African/Level One (djembé & dunun)

This is an introduction to djembé playing. These lessons teach basic rhythms and sound production on the drum. Halfway through the course dunun playing is introduced. Dununs are African bass drums played with sticks. This level lays the foundation for higher levels. No previous experience is required.

African/Level Two (djembé & dunun)

Traditional West African djembé and dunun rhythms are taught. The curriculum changes every eight weeks; therefore, this level can be repeated several times. Completing level one or permission from the instructor is required before enrolling.

African/Level Three (djembé & dunun)

Djembé and dunun rhythms are taught as well as djembé soloing phrases. The class moves faster, and the rhythms are more challenging then in level two. The curriculum changes every eight weeks; therefore, this level can be repeated several times. Permission from the instructor is required before enrolling.

African/Level Four (djembé & dunun)

This is an advanced class for students with a strong background in djembé and dunun. Djembé soloing phrases are taught, as well as djembé accompaniment and dunun parts. Permission from the instructor is required before enrolling.

Afro Cuban/Level One (conga)

This is an introduction to conga drumming. These lessons teach basic rhythms and sound production on the drum. Clavé and bell patterns are also taught. No previous experience is required.

Afro Cuban/Level Two (conga)

This is for people who have taken conga classes with me before, or for players with genuine* experience in traditional afro cuban conga drumming, clavé and bell patterns.

* You've been taught the difference between rumba and son clavé and are familiar with heel-toe hand movement (stuff like that).
